One of the CNMI’s top triathletes, Meiko Carey, will take part in the 2008 Ironman Kansas 70.3 race set for today in Lawrence.

Mieko and her husband, Kevin, left Saipan for Kansas last Thursday to compete in the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run triathlon.

According to its website, the 2008 Ironman Kansas will start on the same beach of Bloomington at Clinton Lake. Athletes will swim one rectangular lap counter-clockwise before returning to the beach.

Athletes will then have a short 50m run to the transition for the bike course, where they will leave the park grounds on Clinton Lake and cover the southwestern roads of Douglas County.

Most of the course is known to locals as “The Iron Cross,” as participants can expect long, winding, flat stretches matched with steep challenging hills offering lake front views.

The bike course is a single loop course that will intersect the “Iron-Cross” section of 458 and 1023 Roads four times offering a spectator friendly course. Participants will then return to the park grounds of Bloomington Beach at Clinton Lake for the bike-to-run transition.

The run portion of the Kansas Ironman is a three-lap run course that consists of asphalt roads and trails throughout Bloomington Beach Park.

Participants will travel through the winding, shaded roads of Hickory and Cedar Campgrounds. The run begins with a half-mile gradual climb leaving the transition followed by mostly flat miles on asphalt. Runners will enjoy a spectator-friendly run course with constant support before finishing back at the beach area.

Before leaving for the mainland last week, Mieko said she hopes to finish the 2008 Ironman Kansas in just over five hours.

Mieko prepared for the Kansas Ironman with the help of 2008 XTERRA Saipan Championship and Tagaman Triathlon winner Andy Noble, who gave her a weekly training regimen to follow.

Kevin earlier said her wife will compete in the Kansan Ironman despite the former sustaining injuries a couple of weeks prior to the race after being struck by falling pieces of concrete being carried by a white/gray cement truck speeding down the backroad near San Vicente School.
