The Karidat Social Services has announced a new date for its 28th anniversary dinner, which will now take place on June 20 at the Aqua Resort & Spa.

According to Karidat executive director Angie V. Leon Guerrero, the anniversary dinner had been postponed at least twice until the Karidat board of directors finally decided to hold it next week as a sure thing.

The reason for the postponement, Leon Guerrero said, is that Karidat wants to make sure that its founder is well enough to attend.

This year, Karidat will be paying a special tribute to Bishop Tomas A. Camacho who founded the Karidat Social Service 28 years ago.

Camacho arrived from Hawaii two weeks ago after he successfully underwent surgery to remove a section of his lung that had been affected by cancer.

According to Dr. Mark Grattan, Camacho’s cardiothoracic surgeon at the Straub Hospital in Honolulu, the lung cancer was at an early stage (Clinical Stage 1), with no clinical evidence of spread, “and it was completely removed.”

Leon Guerrero said Camacho would be attending the anniversary dinner rescheduled for next week as “he is feeling much better now.”

Camacho founded the non-profit charitable organization 28 years ago to provide emergency food, shelter, and services to thousands of people in the Commonwealth.

Also this year, Camacho, who was ordained bishop in 1985, will be stepping down as the highest ranking prelate in the islands when he submits his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI once he turns 75 on Sept. 18, as mandated by Canon Law.

“The Bishop has given so much to the community over the years, and we want to honor him before he resigns,” Leon Guerrero said.
