Ground zero for Pistang Pinoy
This year’s Pistang Pinoy celebration will be seeing a new home.
From the Susupe Civic Center, where the annual event used to be held, organizers of tomorrow’s festivities have decided to hold the Pistang Pinoy at the Garapan Central Park.
The celebration, set to start at 9am tomorrow, is part of the Filipino community’s celebration of their country’s 110th Independence Day.
The Philippine Consulate General, in collaboration with the United Filipino Organizations, have lined up an array of games and activities for both children and adults for this Sunday’s celebration.
UFO chairman Ed Reyes and Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL Maximo are inviting the entire Saipan community to the Sunday event.
“We are looking forward to at least a thousand people this Sunday, but we expect more than that. I just want to call on the locals, the Filipinos, and the entire community to come on down and join us at this fun occasion,” Reyes said.
He said there would be at least 16 food vendors at the Pistang Pinoy, selling various kinds of food and drinks.
UFO president Flor A. Miranda highlighted the importance of the day ahead as a chance for all overseas Filipino workers worldwide “to enjoy our country’s freedom.”
In a recently released statement, Secretary of the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment Marianito D. Roque said the 110th Philippine Independence Day “is an occasion to reflect on the great triumph of the Filipino nation over years of oppression.”
“As we celebrate our independence, I acknowledge our workers including those overseas, for always being actively involved in efforts to preserve and protect our hard-earned freedom.”
Sunday’s guests will include Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, and Maximo.
Members of the UFO and the Philippine Consulate General would like to extend their appreciation to this year’s Pistang Pinoy major sponsors: Pacific Telecommunications Inc., Western Union, Coca-Cola and Budweiser.
