Calvo wanted for new sexual abuse charges
Businessman Patrick Mendiola Calvo on Tuesday announced he would join the delegate race. Now he is wanted by police on charges that he sexually abused an under-aged girl.
The Superior Court issued yesterday a warrant for the arrest of the 43-year-old Calvo, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro. As of press time, there were no reports if he has already been arrested.
Ogumoro said Calvo is facing charges of sexual assault in the second degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree, and disturbing the peace.
Ogumoro said she has no other details of the incident.
She said police detectives are seeking the community’s assistance in providing any information leading to the whereabouts of the businessman.
“Anyone having information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911, the Criminal Investigation Division at 664-9042/45/9050 or Crime Stoppers at 234-7272 if they wish to remain anonymous,” the spokesperson said.
Calvo is the owner of Calvo’s Nursery and Landscaping and the Island Farmers Market. He is also the current president of the Saipan Rotary Club.
On Tuesday, Calvo told Saipan Tribune he will run for the U.S. Congress as an independent candidate.
In November 2000, the Attorney General’s Office filed separate cases charging the businessman with sexual abuse of two children. The government alleged that Calvo committed the sexual abuse on one child on April 1, 1997 and did the same offense on the other girl in January 1998.
Saipan Tribune learned that the cases dragged on for years in local courts before being dismissed.
