Shell matches Mobil price hike
Higher global oil costs prompted Shell stations on Saipan to boost prices for gasoline on Thursday, matching those at Mobil stations, where prices jumped 18 cents earlier this week.
Shell stations on Saipan received orders to increase gas prices by 18 cents on Wednesday to $4.80 per gallon, but the change only took effect Thursday morning, according to one gas station attendant.
Diesel gas prices on Saipan also increased by 20 cents that same day.
Jeff Boyer, retail manager for Shell Marianas, attributed the price hike to global increases in the cost of crude oil.
Shell’s price jump came only a day after Mobil stations on the island increased prices to the same level.
As of press time, the price of oil was holding steady at $136 per barrel, but had spiked up to $139 earlier this week. An announcement by Nigeria’s state-owned oil company that it will take over some operations from Royal Dutch Shell PLC prompted an increase Thursday due to concerns it will limit the company’s production.
