The Saipan Swim Club will compete in the 2008 Guam Swimming Championships this weekend with nine of the association’s swimmers leaving for Guam yesterday at 12:30pm.

SSC head coach Michael Stewart said the nine SSC members that will see action this weekend at the Hagatna Pool are Grace Kimball, Andrew Kimball, Abigail Martinsen, Victoria Chentsova, Kai Staal, Blair Nicholls, Michael Moran, Lester Lapuz, and Junior Pamaran.

Grace Kimball will swim in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,500m freestyle events as well as the 50m and 100m backstroke.

Andrew Kimball, for his part, will compete in the 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, 50m and 100m backstroke, and the 200m individual medley.

Martinsen will try her hand in the 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 200m IM, while Chentsova is entered in the 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle and the 50m backstroke.

Staal carries the SSC’s best hopes in the 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50 butterfly, and 200m IM.

Seven events also are lined up for Blair Nicholls—50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, and 200m IM, while Michael Moran will swim in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, and 1,500m freestyle, and 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Lester Lapuz matches Staal’s eight events when he sees action in the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,500m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, and 400m IM.

His brother, Junior Pamaran, meanwhile, gets to compete in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle as well as the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Stewart said he expects all nine swimmers to swim their best during the meet. He said there is no pressure for them to bring home a bumper-crop of medals and added that the important thing is for them to eclipse their previous best times.

“The kids have worked hard, and this is the season finale. So we are looking for all athletes to have LTBs (life time bests) around the board. Medal count is secondary, with their best performances the medals will come,” he said.
