Fitial appoints King to NMC BOR
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has appointed public defender Janet H. King to serve the remainder of former acting chairman of the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents Joey P. San Nicolas’ term.
Fitial’s appointment requires the consent of the Senate. If confirmed, King will represent the Second Senatorial District and serve the unexpired term of San Nicolas. His term is due to expire on Sept. 23, 2010.
In a letter to Senate President Pete P. Reyes, Fitial stated that he and Lt. Gov. Tim P. Villagomez are confident that King “is highly qualified and will be an asset to the Board of Regents.”
As an appointee of the governor, King is immediately required to file a statement of financial interests with the Public Auditor and other prerequisites required by the Senate such as the copy of her resume, SAF, drug test receipt, and drug test result for submission to the Senate.
According to Fitial, if copies of the following documents are not received by the Senate, the consideration of King’s appointment could be jeopardized.
San Nicolas resigned from the Board of Regents effective May 1, 2008, citing health and family matters. He wrote a letter to Fitial recommending the appointment of King to replace him on the board and serve the remainder of his tenure.
San Nicolas recognized King as a practicing attorney from Tinian “who possesses the education, drive, and commitment to help the board fulfill its constitutional and statutory duties.”
King, who is a native of Tinian, has expressed her interest to represent Tinian in the Board of Regents. She also recently passed the CNMI bar. She is a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Law.
