The Marianas Institute of Filipino Accountants and CPAs showed their concern for the island last May 3 after taking part in the Division of Environmental Quality’s Adopt A Beach cleanup program.

The organization cleaned the shore from the 13 Fishermen Monument up to Quartermaster along Beach Road.

About 30 accountants and associates volunteered in cleaning, headed by MIFICPA president Irene Santiago.

The volunteers started picking up trash at 5pm and finished around sunset. About 10 trash bags full of garbage were collected.

“It’s just right for us to do our part in making our community nice and clean. Let’s challenge ourselves that it is our responsibility, don’t make some excuses besides it is our home.”

The organization’s public relation officer Benjie Ganapin added, “Though it’s our burden, we should do this not because of being obligated but out of service and love. Actually volunteers to this kind of project benefit also, we had fun, joy in serving and of course the calories you lose by walking. It’s a good exercise.”

The participants enjoyed good refreshments and the camaraderie. It was a good opportunity for the accountants to meet new friends and be away from business office environment, added Ganapin.

MIFICPA plans to do at least one cleanup every two months. As part of the organization’s theme this year, the cleanup is a way to show the group’s unity.

It is a good outlet for the accountants to exercise and at the same time help out, according to Santiago.

MIFICPA is reminding everyone to please be accountable for your own trash, help beautify CNMI. For more information, contact Irene Santiago at 287-7997 or Jho Doreza at 322-0997. (mificpa)
