Eight teams advance to next round
The 16-team field in the Saipan Billiards Association Budweiser Cup was trimmed down to half as the season-ending tournament enters its final two weeks.
The eight teams are expected to go down to four after yesterday’s games held in various bars on the island. Results of the matches were not yet available at press time.
Moving on into the quarterfinal round are regular season champion SaipanCell-Krystal Perfect Spot Hustlers after squeezing out a 4-3 win in their knockout match last week.
With the score tied at 3-3 after the five singles matches and the opening doubles, Jerry Soriano and Erwin Gomez gave the Hustlers the win after scoring a 2-0 sweep of Luis Fajardo and Ryan Odicta in the final doubles.
Joining the Hustlers are Len’s 5 Bad Boyz after a 4-0 blanking of USSP Fotten Palau, while Porky’s Wild Hogs also squeezed out a 4-3 win over Coral Reef Shark Attack.
USSP Wat-Ever and the VFW Warriors scored similar 4-2 wins over Krystal Perfect Spotters and Lens 5 Amigos, while Wild Bill’s Snipers and Godfather’s Magas also made it to the next round after pulling off identical 4-1 decisions against Coral Reef Barracuda and Wild Bill’s Snipers.
The surviving two teams will battle for the title on May 27 after the May 20 semifinals.
The 2008 Winter/Spring SBA Budweiser Open 8-Ball League awards banquet will be held on June 8 at 11am at Pacific Island Club’s Charley’s Cabaret in San Antonio. The cost is $25 for adults and $12.50 for kids.
