The 9th grade History class of Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja, under the direction of PRTI supervisor and ESFDB instructor Edward Maratita Jr., recently had the opportunity to travel to Guam to conduct research at the Micronesian Area Research Center at the University of Guam.

Their research about NMI history serves as a basis for analyzing knowledge claims in areas such as Science, Mathematics, Human Sciences, Arts, and Ethics. The last three involved, among other things, issues concerning cultures and values.

“Due to limited learning resources on Rota, our teacher had to improvise by taking us to Guam for our research,” explained ESFDB 9th grader Jenny Dela Cruz.

According to fellow classmate Jonicia Taisacan, the trip was an educational experience “and what made it more exciting [was that] it was a group effort.”

“It was fun because we did not only do our class research but took part in a drug prevention conference,” added ESFDB 9th grader Crystal Calvo.

The students are also part of the PRTI DARE/GUTS Student Role Model program and ESFDB DARE/GUTS Alumni. Aside from their school research project, they participated in the 18th Annual Youth For Youth Conference held April 18-20, 2008, in Guam.

The students acknowledge the support of Vicente and Rose Dela Cruz, Rodney and Millie Taisacan, Roman Calvo and Vivian Atalig, UOG-MARC staff, Barrigada Vice Mayor June Blas (Guam), CNMI Public School System board member Tanya King, Sgt. Major Herman Atalig, ESFDB Administration and staff, PRTI Training Cadres, Bay Breeze Restaurant-Rota, and the Rota Community. (PR)
