NMC to use $380K to fill critical positions
The Northern Marianas College said it will be requesting to use some of the $380,000 committed by Finance Secretary Eloy Inos to fill critical positions at the college to help it reach full compliance once the money becomes available.
NMC president Carmen Fernandez that there are at least four positions that the NMC management team has identified to be critical.
“We started out with 10 but now it’s down to four. So we’ve actually shortened the list. We sat down and deliberated extensively to decide what those most critical positions are,” Fernandez said.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who has confirmed the $380,000 to NMC, said he fully supports the college president’s efforts to meet full compliance and that he has dedicated that amount to the institution to fund critical staff requirements and renovation and repairs.
The governor added that he is exploring a plan to leverage federal Capital Improvement Project funds so as to provide the needed operational cost of the college.
Fernandez said the college has yet to receive the $380,000 from the Finance secretary and that she is making follow-up calls as often as possible until it is received.
In the NMC Compliance Action Plan, Fernandez outlined the need to continue filling critical positions for each month consecutively from January 2008 to December 2008.
She explained that it is because the recruitment process is ongoing.
“And because of the situation that we’re in, we can almost technically view any position as critical because we’re operating on a very bold structure,” Fernandez said.
There are at least 10 regular positions that have yet to be filled at NMC.
