DEQ awards contest winners

The Division of Environmental Quality held an Awards Ceremony for the Environmental Awareness contest winners on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Saipan World Resort.

Recycling Contest, aimed to divert waste from the landfill. 9 schools recycled over 235,681 pounds of aluminum cans, glass, plastics, paper, cardboard and other mixed recyclables.

The elementary category was won by Kagman Elementary School, 1st place; GTC Elementary School, 2nd place; and WSR Elementary School, 3rd place. Honorable mention awards were granted to San Vicente Elementary School, San Antonio Elementary School, and Dandan Elementary School.

Marianas High School won first place in the high school category; while Grace Christian Academy placed first in the junior high category and placed second in the high school category.

Sister Remedios Early Childhood School recycled more than 99,297 pounds, making the small school the overall winner of the contest.

Another Environmental Awareness contest was the high school essay competition, where all 3 winners attend Marianas High School. First place went to Adeleyah Mojica; second place to Raquel Villagomez; and third place Necita Aldan.

The Cook A Rainbow challenge, held earlier on March 29, in conjunction with CNMI Nutrition Month, was won by Frank M. Deleon Guerrero, first place; Glen Santos, second place; and Ivan Gatbonton, third place. [B][I](DEQ)[/I][/B]
