Parade of Books needs more funds
The Rotary Club of Saipan’s Third Annual Parade of Books, which is slated for May 17, is still looking for funds to help the event become an even more successful one.
Rotary Saipan president Patrick Calvo said that when looking at the budget available for the event, “we’re a little bit short on giving prizes to all the participating schools.”
At least 10 schools will be participating in this event.
“We’ve got all the prize money already secured for the first, second, and third but we could still use a couple more,” he added.
At least $400 is needed to help with the prizes for the event.
“One way or another, we will give every school $100 for participating. It’s a lot of effort for the kids. They do spend a lot of time preparing for this competition. It’s the least we can do,” Calvo said.
The Rotary has invited all schools, public and private, to the parade, limiting participation to grade levels 1-4. Advance registration is required. The basic format is for classes and their teachers to choose a storybook for the children to perform. Skits must be fully performed by the participating schoolchildren only.
Rotary said the judging criteria would be based on a 1-10 scale that includes: closeness to time frame, costume depiction, enthusiasm of participants, vocal clarity, and overall adherence to theme.
Last year, Oleai Elementary School snagged the 2007 championship, followed by the Kagman Elementary School, which came in second, and Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, which placed third.
