Prioritize education!
It is with such disappointment and a disgrace that some members of our legislative body have sought to produce a bill to take funds away from our students who are away from home determined to earn some type a professional degree so that one day after they have completed their educational goals may return back home and educate our future generations with what they have learned abroad.
We have students who are attending the University of Guam and in the U.S. mainland under the SHEFA Scholarship program, which is at this point enormously worried as to what will happen if $500,000 is taken away from SHEFA for the payment of salaries of certain government employees and for other purposes.
Taotao Tano is urging all of you to think back to all your platforms while seeking elected office and ask yourselves this important question: Is education the No. 1 priority or not? In every campaign drive or forums that we voters of the Commonwealth heard from, majority of you prioritized education yet today Congressman David Apatang is doing the opposite and is seeking to re-appropriate and hamper our students’ continued higher education.
The reprogramming, re-appropriation and amendment of laws need to stop because this is why we are all in the current predicament we now face. The habits of the past leadership must be stopped immediately. It is such an embarrassment and disgrace that an elected leader whom everyone respects is actually the author of H.L.B. 16-9. It is our hope that all of you our elected leaders understand the significant damage to be endured if such a bill is entertained or enacted.
Leave education alone, but support education 110 percent for it was a priority in each of your platforms.
