Robert Talavera and Gloria Omechalang were hailed champions of the May Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament after toppling Day 1 pacesetters last Monday at the Saipan Bowling Center in Garapan.

Talavera turned on the heat against first day leader Percy Omechalang and went on to knock down 868 pinfalls to take the men’s championship with plenty to spare.

His 18-pin over Omechalang was built around four games of 200 pins or more. He started off with a 225, followed it up with a 215 and 202, before finishing in style with a 226.

The SBC lanes supervisor’s four 200-plus scores allowed him to average a scorching 217 pinfalls a game.

Omechalang, meanwhile, settled for runner-up honors after his 850 and 212.5 average last Sunday were eclipsed by the hard-charging Talavera. He set the score to beat after a four-game series of 242, 214, 192, and 202.

Third and fourth places went to Raul Dumapit and Lito Teodoro who recorded pinfalls of 844 and 830, respectively. Dumapit had games of 203, 190, 226, and 225 to finish with a 211 average, while Teodoro put together games of 186, 222, 197, and 225 to come away with a 207.5 average.

Talavera, Omechalang, Dumapit, and Teodoro earned $100, $60, $40, and $30, respectively for their efforts.

Omechalang also brought home one case of Anchor Milk for topping Day 1 of the competition.

While her husband fell short Monday, Gloria did a Talavera when she upended Day 1 leader Ron Cal Monday to win the Queen of the Lanes.

Gloria tattooed 747 pins to beat out Cal by five pins. She capped rolls of 158, 199, 168, with a monstrous 222 in her fourth and final game. She wound up averaging 186.75.

Cal, for her part, took the lead Sunday with her 747 pinfall total and 185.5 average built around a four-game series of 157, 168, 199, and 218.

Diane Chong wound up third with her 693 total and 173.25 average. She had a four-game series of 149, 183, 166, and 195.

All three were awarded cash prizes of $70 for Omechalang, $40 for Cal, and $25 for Chong. Like Percy, Cal got a consolation of sorts when she received a case of Anchor Milk from Micronesian Brokers, Inc. and its affable general manager Kitz Barja.

A total of 56 entries took part in the May King and Queen of the Lanes.

Last Sunday also at the Saipan Bowling Center, Raphael Zapanta won his third Bing Energy Drink Prince/Princess of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament of the year after toppling 658 pins in four games for a 164.5 average.

Like the Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes, the Bing Prince/Princess of the Lanes is sponsored by MARPAC.
