The Philippine Consulate, in collaboration with the NMI Humanities Council, is encouraging all high school students from grades 9th to 12th to participate in this year’s “The Ties that Bind” essay contest.

The essay contest is timed to coincide with the 110th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2008.

Essays must address the theme “The Ties That Bind: Exploring the Historic Connections of the United States, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Republic of the Philippines” and must be submitted by participating schools to the Humanities Council on or before 4pm on May 30, 2008.

The awards for the contest is a round-trip ticket for two to Manila, Philippines for first place; $300 for second place and $200 for second place.

The contest promises to provide an excellent opportunity to explore and reaffirm the depths of the historic ties that have long existed between the CNMI, the United States, and the Philippines.

Interested participants are urged to procure the official rules for the contest from participating school on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
