Joey P. San Nicholas stepped down as acting chair of the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents last week.

This was disclosed yesterday by members of the Board of Regents who met with the House Committee of Health, Education, and Wellness Committee.

According to San Nicholas, his resignation had something to do with “family and medical issues.”

Regent Agnes McPhetres said the board’s loss of San Nicholas is a very sad one.

“He was very good board member, a very intelligent person, and a level-headed person,” McPhetres said.

The board has appointed Charles Cepeda as the board’s new acting chair. Rita Inos, chairperson of the Board of Regents, has not been on island for almost a year but continues to hold the chair title.

McPhetres said an organizational meeting would be held in June, during which the board would “probably” nominate a new chair then.

In February this year, Eloise A. Furey stepped down as member of the NMC Board of Regents.

She declined to give any reason for her sudden resignation after six years of being a member.

Press secretary Charles Reyes said that although the governor appoints Board of Regents members, the governor’s acceptance of a member’s resignation is not needed since NMC is an independent and autonomous agency.

“This is just a courtesy since the NMC Board of Regents does not report to the governor or fall under his authority,” Reyes said.
