In-flight video on invasive species urged
Regional leaders have asked Continental Micronesia to show an in-flight video informing travelers what they can do to help stop the spread of invasive species to the islands.
The leaders of the Northern Marianas, Guam, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands stated their request in a letter prepared during the recently concluded 9th Micronesian Chief Executives’ Summit in Palau.
The letter, addressed to Continental Micronesia chief executive officer Mark Erwin, stated that the video “would reflect the beauty of our natural environments and pass on the important message that the long-term sustainability of these ecosystems is highly dependent on our ability to stop the introduction of invasive species.”
The video would also show how travelers can minimize the possibility of unwanted introduction of invasive species during their travels throughout Micronesia.
“One of the greatest common threat to each of our island environments, ecologies, and economic prosperity is invasive species,” the leaders said. “In order to avoid the unwanted introduction of dangerous invasive species, such as the brown tree snake, to the fragile island ecosystems in our region, governments, corporate communities, tourists and citizens of our region must be aware of the potential threats and be diligent in our efforts to protect our borders.”
