Raphael wins 3rd Bing tournament
Raphael Zapanta won his third Bing Prince/Princess of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament of the year last Sunday, adding to his victories in the February and March editions of the monthly competition.
Zapanta outdueled April champion Zack Cruz to take home the monthly plum held at the Saipan Bowling Center in San Jose.
The 13-year-old Chacha Junior High School student edged Cruz by a mere 12 pins, 658-646, following a four-game roll-off of 180, 170, 143, and 165 that allowed him to finish with an average of 164.5 pinfalls.
Cruz, meanwhile, was in the running for a second consecutive Bing victory after putting together rolls of 167, 142, and 162 his first three trips to bowling lanes.
He would’ve beaten Zapanta if he knocked down more than 187 pins in the fourth and final game, but it was not to be as he settled for runner-up honors with a 175 to conclude the tournament with a 161.5 pinfall average.
Troy Verdaguer’s 590 pinfalls and 147.5 average, meanwhile, was good enough for third place and allowed him to make it into the money list.
Zapanta, Cruz, and Verdaguer earned $20, $15, and $10 for their performances. They also took home a case of Anchor Milk courtesy of Micronesian Brokers, Inc. and its affable general manager Kitz Barja.
Ryan Gutierrez (579 pinfalls and 144.75 average), Marion McKenzie (563 and 140.75), and Toby Verdaguer (359 and 89.75) round out the six participants of the monthly Bing Prince/Princess of the Lanes.
In the Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes, Percy Omechalang leads the men’s roll-off with a first day score of 850 (212.5 average), while Ron Cal is pacing the women with her 742 and 185.5.
Results of Day 2 of the two-day King and Queen of the Lanes last night were still not available as of press time.
The Bing Prince/Princess of the Lanes as well as the Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes are sponsored by MARPAC. The tournaments are organized by the Saipan Bowling Association.
