As a result of mechanical problems on Engine No. 3 at Power Plant 1, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. was unable to generate sufficient electrical power to meet the island demand yesterday.

The problems were affecting the performance of the engine. To prevent further damage to the unit, it was immediately shut down and Power Plant 1 initiated the contingent load-shedding schedule at 8am. The load shedding was scheduled to continue until midnight last night.

CUC said its operators would make all efforts to include only areas identified in the contingent load shedding schedule. However, should the power plant require to take additional power demand offline, other areas of the grid will be affected.
