(Walter Sutherland) The Kagman High School Ayuyus swept the Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays during their game in the 2011-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Volleyball League last Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Southern came to play at the start, but KHS managed to take the opening set, 25-19, and hung on to escape with a 27-25 victory in the second for the automatic win. With a win off the table, Southern did not lay down, but in the end KHS went on to finish the sweep, 15-11.

The win put KHS in a tie for third place with MHS QT’s, as they hold similar 6-5 records. The MHS QT’s notched its fifth win after defeating sister team KFC Fins in all three sets, 25-14, 25-17, 15-11.

Notably, the QT’s have worked out quite a successful season and have managed to stay under the radar for the bulk of the season, while KHS started its season slow, but came together in the latter part of the competition.

As for KFC Fins, it was yet another rough outing for the young developing squad. KFC also came up short against the Saipan International School Geckos in three sets, 15-25, 2-25, 6-15. The KFC Fins is winless in the 12-game regular season.

In other results, the GCA Eagles are now a game away from capping a perfect regular season after defeating the Awesome Fins, 2-1.

The Eagles took the first set, 25-12, but were stunned by the Awesome Fins in the second, 17-25. Then the Awesome Fins kept GCA on its heels early in the tiebreaker set before the Eagles called a timeout and regrouped to bag the win, 15-3.

The regular season wraps up on Monday with GCA taking on Southern on the north court and KHS battling the MHS QT’s in a tiebreaker match on the south end. Both games will start at 4pm.

Teams will get about a week of rest before playing in the postseason double-elimination tournament scheduled from November 15 to 17. Tinian High School is expected to join the competition and will automatically be issued the fourth seed in the bracket. Other teams’ seeding will depend on their regular season records.

GCA (11-0) and SIS (10-2) are assured of the first and second spots, respectively, while the winner of Monday’s KHS and QT’s pairing will take the No. 3 ranking.
