Ayuda Foundation to launch ‘Operation Sewing Basket’
The Ayuda Foundation will open Operation Sewing Basket, a program to provide tailoring fabrics and equipment to teach sewing skills to young women in Chuuk. Chuuk, like many island nations, is grappling with a high teen pregnancy rate and a low level of school attendance.
Chuuk’s political and social leaders wish to teach young women skills that will increase their earning ability, their learning skills and enable them to lift themselves and their families above the poverty level, to become business owners, to become taxpayers, to become thoughtful voters and to become leaders in their own community.
Kiki Stinnet, president of the Chuuk Women’s Council, has received a grant to purchase sewing machines and has acquired a building to house the training, but materials and fabric are so expensive in FSM that she has requested The Ayuda Foundation to ask for excess fabrics and sewing equipment, i.e., bias tape, curtains, drapes, fabric scraps, flat fabric, gathered skirts, lace pieces, lining materials, needles, pin cushions, ribbon, ric rac, scissors, sewing baskets/boxes, sewing machine needles, straight pins, tape measures, thimbles, thread, transparent tape.
The Ayuda Foundation is not requesting the donation of used clothing; it is requesting only those items that can be spread flat to be cut and assembled into children’s garments and handicrafts.
