Autopsy determines woman was hit-and-run victim
The autopsy that was conducted last Friday on the 20-year-old victim in the tragic Marpi hit-and-run case over two weeks confirmed that the victim died due to blunt force trauma.
According to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Dre Pangelinan, the autopsy on 20-year-old Sophia A. Demapan determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma from the car crash.
“I can’t speak too much on the findings of the autopsy, but it was found that the victim did die from blunt force trauma as a result of a vehicle-pedestrian crash. The completed report will be sent over to the prosecutor of the case,” he said.
Pangelinan said the autopsy was conducted last Friday at 1pm at the Commonwealth Health Center by Dr. Philip Dauterman.
“After the autopsy, that’s when the arrest warrant was signed. It was signed the next day, Saturday, at around 1pm and the arrest was executed that same day,” Pangelinan said.
Last Monday, the Superior Court decided to try as a minor the 17-year-old who was arrested for allegedly driving the car that hit and killed Demapan in Marpi, and left her lifeless body on the shoulder of the road.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, Demapan’s body was found by a person who was driving home at around 9pm last Tuesday and had noticed her body on the shoulder of Route 30 in Marpi. The caller immediately stopped to help and called the police for assistance.
At the scene, police noticed tire marks near where they found the woman’s body. Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services responders saw multiple lacerations and deformities on the female’s body. In addition, the officers also noticed that she sustained multiple fractures and severe injuries to her head.
