The Northern Marianas Humanities Council’s 12th Annual Valentine N. Sengebau Poetry Competition was held on Oct. 29, 2015, at Charley’s, Pacific Islands Club on Saipan.

Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja participated in the Junior Division, where junior high/middle school students must recite a poem from Sengebau’s book, Microchild. The poem must be from the Cultural Identity, Politics, or Images sections, and students were asked to give a 1- to 3-minute introduction explaining why he or she chose the specific poem.

Eighth-grader Angelo Lucero and seventh-grader Jeremy John Atalig II represented Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja after winning their school level recital event.

Competing for the first time, Atalig came second—a strong showing that could have given Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja its third win in a row.

“I praised Angelo and Jeremy for their dedication and hard work they put in to defend our title,” said administrator-principal Carmen H. Atalig. “We have good reason to be proud of our student representatives of the Luta community.”

“Next year I will bring back the perpetual plaque where it belongs,” said Atalig, the son of proud parents Jeremy and Imelda H. Atalig. (ESFDB)
