The veteran pair of J.J. Atalig and Joey Dela Cruz ruled Mariana Resort & Spa’s 37th Anniversary golf tournament held last Saturday at the Marianas Country Club.

Atalig and Dela Cruz scored 62.5 to beat the tandem of Manny Mangarero and Tars Olopai, who recorded 63.5, in the double Peoria tournament. Kim Jun and Kim Bong Chun placed third with a 65.

Atalig and Dela Cruz won a six-month free golf at MCC, while Mangarero and Olopai earned a free pass for three months. Kim Jun and Kim Bong Chun went home with free golf coupons.

It was Atalig’s third straight crown since winning the Hyatt Regency Saipan Charity Golf Classic last year. He and Dela Cruz also topped the two-man scramble best ball-format 2014 Steven Brownstein/Saipan Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic.

Longtime par-busters Harry Nakamura and Louie Tilipao bested three other pairs in the low gross category. They fired an 8-under 64 to clinch the $700 champions purse.

Jenny Hegland and Thomson Palik were one shot behind with a 7-under 65 to settle for second place and $500, while Ben and Rudy Sablan shot a 6-under-66 for $300.

Adam Hardwick and Jeff Taylor finished fourth with a 5-under 67 for $150.

Aside from cash prizes, the Top 3 finishers in the low gross also received trophies.

Kwon Yong Sook hit the longest drive at hole No. 4, while Hegland had the accurate iron tee off at No. 7. Rep. Anthony Benavente (Ind.-Saipan) was the nearest to the pin at No. 16.

More than 100 golfers joined the one-day tournament, held as a fundraising event for the benefit of the Saipan Little League Baseball, Inc.

SLLBI president Ben Jones thanked Mariana Resort & Spa for donating the proceeds of the golf tournament.

He presented a plaque of appreciation to Mariana Resort & Spa general manager Gloria Cavanaugh, who also thanked all the players who came out and supported them and the sponsors that made the event successful.
