Rota Mayor Efraim M. Atalig and Northern Islands Mayor Jerome K. Aldan took their oaths of office yesterday morning at the Governor’s Office and was sworn in by Gov. Eloy S. Inos, becoming the new mayors of their respective municipalities.

Atalig, dressed in white long-sleeved button-down shirt and a slim black tie, took his oath in the presence of his family members.

Aldan, on the other hand, was draped in cultural accessories including a mwar mwar, beaded necklaces, and a tea leaves lei, over a suit with a light blue button-down shirt.

After his swearing in, Atalig said he will seek to increase the salaries of municipal employees. It was earlier reported that salaries for government employees on Rota haven’t changed since 1995.

Atalig also wants to create an alternative means of transporting goods to and from Rota and a vocational school to help train the island’s residents.

Aldan said he is thankful to the people of the Northern Islands for believing in him and voting for him.

“The first work of order is to try to get the people their lands. That is what I will be working, both agricultural and village homesteads,” Aldan said.

Other than that, Aldan said he plans to look at some economic activities that have been planned for the Northern Islands since his father’s time.

“There is a lot of work ahead of us including the military, which is still looking at Pagan,” he said.

According to Aldan, the military meeting on Pagan is set for today, Jan. 13, at 3:30pm at the Governor’s Office where a news briefing will be held shortly afterwards.
