Apatang urges dog owners to take advantage of spay/neuter program
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang is urging pet owners to take advantage of the Saipan Mayor’s Office’s spay/neuter program next month.
“I urge everyone to take advantage of this program because it is an opportunity for them to take their dogs in for treatment,” Apatang told Saipan Tribune.
The spay and neutering services will be offered from May 18 to May 30.
Apatang said they have added Kagman as another location to perform the spay/neuter program in addition to the dog kennel in Lower Base.
“We have been preparing and we’re working with some organizations in setting up for the spay and neuter program. We have also been getting in-kind contributions,” he said.
The Humane Society International and Animal Balance will be hosting the spay and neuter services.
HSI Hawaii senior state director and Pacific Islands policy coordinator Inga Gibson said that spaying and neutering is a key component of any animal control program.
“It is a very simple procedure. The animals live longer, they’re healthier, they’re less likely to bite, they’re less likely to roam, and they’re less likely to be perceived as a nuisance,” she said.
Gibson earlier said they originally planned to charge $25 but soon decided to do it for free instead.
Apatang said they are also looking for volunteers to help with the spay and neuter program.
“We are still looking for volunteers, so if you’re interested please go to the Mayor’s Office on Beach Road in Oleai,” he said.
