Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang asked Rotary Club of Saipan members to back up the Saipan Mayor’s Office’s campaign to beautify the island during the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan yesterday afternoon.
Apatang, who was accompanied by field operation director Joan Aquino and Dog Control Program manager Spencer Marchadesch, was the guest speaker in yesterday’s meeting and he took the opportunity to update the Rotary Club of his office’s projects and programs.
Apatang asked Rotary members to assist in beautifying the island by helping pick up trash whenever it is seen.
Apatang said he will also push through with the late Saipan mayor Donald G. Flores’ Sunset Project Garden along Beach Road and asked Rotary members to help in the beautification project.
Apatang hopes to finish the project within three months.
“One of the duties of the mayor of Saipan is to clean up and beautify the island. As you know when I go out in the newspaper all I say is ‘beautification,’ and I need your help too as Rotarians and your businesses. I am writing to each business all along the villages and roads to help me clean up the islands,” he said.
“As you drive along the villages you’ll see all these trash. If [the dumpster] is full, they’ll just throw them on the outside of the trash can and all those trash will start flying, so I will need your help and work together,” he added.
Apatang also gave an overview of each program that is administered by his office and his future plans. Some of these projects include continuing the relationship of cultural exchange students from Japan and Korea, providing secondary road cleanup, and village and residential cleanups.
