Angelly Marie Guiang, a sophomore at Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr./Sr. High School, has officially been selected as the new student representative on the CNMI State Board of Education.

Guiang is a member of the National Honor Society, her high school’s class treasurer, vice president of the school’s Young Harmony Glee Club, and also a ranking officer in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, or JROTC.

Last Thursday, Gov. Eloy S. Inos officially appointed Guiang as a non-voting member of the State Board of Education to represent public school students.

“Lt. Gov. Ralph Torres and I are confident that you will make a valuable contribution, and we appreciate your willingness to serve and provide input from a student’s point of view,” wrote Inos in his appointment letter.

On Friday, BOE chair Herman Guerrero welcomed Guiang to the education board.

“We have confidence in your ability to represent the public school students and bring their concerns to the [board],” he said.

Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan nominated Guiang on Tuesday.

In the commissioner’s nomination packet, Guiang is described as “responsible person who does her tasks right.”

“She believes that everybody is created differently but we are made to be equal regardless of race or background. She respects and values people she works with,” the nomination packet reads.

Guiang further described her education achievements in an essay justifying her leadership skills and ability to represent on the board.

She also noted her community outreach efforts. She has been an active leader in the Youth Ministry at the Rota Christian Assembly of God Church. She has played a role in “beautifying beaches” through a local cleanup program, and she has also won first place in the Child Abuse Prevention program.

Guiang will serve on the Student Issues and Community and Parent Programs board committee.

As student representative, she is expected to call meetings with various student council bodies, ensure student participation and talk of issues relevant to the public school student body.

Guiang will replace current student rep Lora Dee A. Hocog on June 17.

A student representative is appointed on a rotating basis by senatorial district. Hocog is from Saipan Southern High School.
