Andersen increases security at Northwest Field

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam—Personnel from the 36th Security Forces Squadron will be working with the local authorities to increase security at Northwest Field. Increased security plans will include more presence patrols, newly installed security cameras near poaching areas, and security patrols with the MilitaryWorking Dog unit.

The increase in security measures is sometimes necessary during large construction projects. However, Security Forces personnel report an increase in fence cutting at Northwest Field with as many as six incidents occurring in the last two weeks. Additionally, there have been three small brush fires both inside and outside the fencing area near Ritidian and the main gate.

Trespassing onto federal property is considered a federal offense and violators can be arrested, sentenced up to six months in prison, and fined up to $5,000. Anyone found damaging or trespassing on military installation fencing or other federal property will be apprehended and released to the local authorities.

“We are asking the public to avoid base perimeter fencing and other restricted areas for their own safety,” said Lt. Col. Michael J. Jewell, commander of the 36th Security Forces Squadron. “We have many assets at Northwest Field that require protection and we consider fence cutting a serious federal offense.”

The base is also working with village mayors to help inform the public about laws and regulations regarding trespassing on federal installations.
