Alter City proposes Aerobus transit system

Share

Alter City Group, which plans to build a world-class resort on Tinian called the Plumeria Golf & Casino Resort, is proposing an elevated transportation system that would link Saipan and Tinian—at no cost to the CNMI government.

In a statement yesterday, it said that Alter City Group president and board chair Kin Ian Leong has recognized the CNMI’s need for a public transportation system that not only serves its local population but can bridge the gap between Saipan and Tinian. The benefits from connecting the two islands are extensive, the most beneficial outcome being the ability to provide the people of Saipan and Tinian a reliable public transportation system that provides access to life’s essentials and idyllic destinations.

Leong introduces the Aerobus—a patented elevated transportation system that utilizes concrete or slender steel pylons to elevate suspension cables (similar to those used for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California) that serves as a guideway for passenger and cargo cars.

An Aerobus vehicle consists of modules that are linked together into an articulated, integrated train. On its fifth generation, Aerobus technology has a zinc coating that prevents the occurrence of rust on this system.

This proposed transit system includes six stations that will run along the west side of Saipan (Beach Road), and two stations in the south, including one at the Saipan International Airport, before stretching across the channel and connecting to Tinian, where four stations are proposed, including the Tinian Airport and the resort.

As tourism numbers are projected to reach 1.5 million per year, the presence of a reliable transportation system that can also serve as a tourist attraction becomes crucial. In the beginning stages, the proposed system will look to transport 1,000 passengers per hour, per direction. Quantity and frequency can increase as the demand arises.

According to ACG, the Aerobus is the lowest cost, most efficient, least environmentally-disruptive light rail transit system available. An Aerobus system offers unmatched advantages over conventional monorails, people movers and low-cable technologies.

Alter City Group Inc. has been in the planning stages for its proposed Plumeria Golf & Casino Resort for two years now. The project includes not only a world-class resort, but a casino, an 18-hole golf course, and a themed water park, just to name a few. (ACG)
