Allegedly drunk man attacks men playing mahjong
An allegedly drunk man armed with a machete barged into a group of Chinese men playing mahjong at the Sablan barracks compound in San Antonio on Saturday afternoon, hitting one and causing a laceration to the man’s left forearm.
The suspect, Scott Patrick Owen, also allegedly resisted when a police officer tried to secure him for his aggressive behavior. He pulled his left arm to get free and allegedly pushed the officer.
Owen, 41, jobless, was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace, and resisting arrest.
At yesterday’s initial court appearance hearing, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho maintained the $25,000 cash bail initially imposed on Owen.
When asked, Owen said his passport was stolen in Guam.
Assistant public defender Nancy Dominski served as counsel for the defendant.
Preliminary hearing will be on Nov. 27 at 1:30pm.
According to police detective Wally Emul Jr., police received a call about an assault with a dangerous weapon at the Sablan barracks compound on Saturday at 1:36pm.
When police officer Maverick Saures arrived at the compound, he saw two Chinese men holding a man, later identified as Owen.
Saures observed that the Owen had bloodstains all over his clothes. Owen allegedly resisted by pulling his hand and pushing the officer. Saures then brought him down. That prompted Owen to shout profanities at the Chinese men.
Saures noticed that among the Chinese men in the area was one whose left forearm was bleeding badly due to a 5.5-centimeter laceration. Saures called the Department of Public Safety central through radio to request for a medic.
Another officer arrived and assisted Saures in securing Owen.
The alleged victim told police that he was playing mahjong with another man when Owen came and sat by the table, drinking a bottle of vodka. Three more men came, drank with the alleged victim, and joined the game.
The victim said the problem started when he and his companions began speaking Chinese. Owen stood up and yelled profanities at them. He got a machete from his room and brandished it toward those playing mahjong.
The victim said he made a gesture for Owen to calm down, but the suspect instead sliced his left forearm.
