Fishermen from throughout the Marianas are gearing up for the 2012 Rota Cliff Fishing Derby set for this weekend.

Organizers say competitors from Saipan, Tinian, and Guam are anticipated to join fishermen from Rota for the annual event with last year’s winners also returning.

Mother Nature is also lending a hand to make the event a success.

“The weather during this year’s event will most likely be calmer than the previous derby event,” said Sandra Atalig, acting manager of roads & grounds maintenance at the Marianas Visitors Authority (MVA) office in Rota. “However, we encourage all participants to gear up and take precautionary measures while fishing on the cliff lines.”

The designated derby fishing sites are As Matmos, Malilok, and Pona Point. Registration is $30. Fishermen age 16 and younger are free.

Derby check-in will be at 4 p.m. on July 27 at Guata Beach Park, followed by orientation and the start of the derby at 5:30 p.m. The derby will end at 12 noon on the final day.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the Top 4 finishers in the categories of biggest fish and total weight ($600 first place, $300 second place, $200 third place, and $100 fourth place).

The Top 4 finishers in the most variety category will be receiving in-kind donations from Ambros Inc.

“Fishing is fun for everyone of all ages,” said Atalig. “Don’t let your summer end without experiencing it. We invite everyone to come and make this sporting event a memorable one.”

The weekend event is co-sponsored by the Marianas Visitors Authority (MVA), the Rota Mayor’s Office, Rota Municipal Council, Rota Legislative Delegation, and Ambros Inc.

Weigh-ins will be at each fishing site in the morning and evening of July 28 and on the morning of July 29. Reserving spots before the derby begins will not be allowed.
