Aldan: Dynasty’s casino closure will have ripple effects on Tinian
Rep. Edwin Aldan (Ind-Tinian) is disappointed with Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino’s decision to temporarily close its casino doors, worried about how this would impact the public and the company’s community programs.
“Unfortunately, the closure of the Dynasty’s casino will have a rippling effect on not just employees, but the community at large because it will also affect programs such as medical referral and scholarships,” Aldan said.
Aldan said, however, that he supports Tinian Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas’ decision to give affected municipal employees notice informing them that their contracts might not be renewed on Oct. 1, 2015.
“It is important that those who may be affected are informed immediately so that they can immediately start thinking about making adjustments to their finances,” Aldan said.
Casino revenues provide funding for 43 positions within the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission, Tinian Mayor’s Office, and the Office of the Tinian Municipal Council.
Aldan acknowledged the difficulty for any elected official to notify their staff of a furlough or non-renewal of their employment contracts.
“It was the responsible and right thing to do,” he said.
Aldan said he looks forward to Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission’s approval of Tinian Ent. Casino license so that a casino can reopen on the island.
“Casino revenues have allowed the municipality to provide much needed programs from our man’amko to our manhoben. I am hoping and looking forward to the approval of TEC’s license so that the casino can reopen and begin generating some revenues so that we can continue those programs,” he said.
After Tinian Dynasty closed its casino operations due to flight cancellations following Typhoon Soudelor’s devastation of Saipan, hundreds of Tinian Dynasty employees were laid off.
