Joe H. Aldan’s year is off to a good start as he ruled the Saipan Golfers Association’s January Ace of the Month Tournament held last Jan. 28 at the Graham Marsh-designed Kingfisher Golf Links.

Aldan shot rounds of 44 and 42, giving him a gross score of 86, and with an 18 handicap, he earned a net score of 68 for a two-shot lead over runner-up Jung Eun Teack and third placer Juan Lizama.

Jung and Lizama finished tied for second place with a net score of 70, but the former secured second place after the scorecard playoffs. Jung had a 39 and 44 on the front and back nines for an 83 and his 13 handicap gave him the net 70, while Lizama recorded a pair of 42s for an 84 and ended up with the same tally based on his 14 handicap.

Meanwhile, beside placing second to Aldan, Jung also had the longest drive at hole No. 7, while Rick Kautz duplicated the feat at hole No. 14.

Joe Demapan, the 2017 SGA Ace of the Year, was the closest to the pin winner at hole No. 6, while Steve Balakrishna and Larry A. Guerrero secured the same award at holes No. 8 and 12. Aldan also earned a closest to the pin prize with his shot at hole No. 15.

The SGA’s monthly tournament continues this Sunday with the staging of the February Ace, also at Kingfisher. Show time and registration is set at 8am, while tee time will be at 9am.
