Agulto wins Christmas billiards tourney
Patience and steady play took Joey Agulto to the championship of the Local Boys Christmas Billiard Tournament at 19th Hole last Dec. 22, 2011.
Agulto topped Randy Sablan in the finals to earn the first place trophy, $170 and a bottle of wine gift. Mei Rengiil was third, with Ed Suzuki fourth, Dave Maratita fifth, and Nize Masayos sixth.
First through fifth places won trophies donated by Pacific Amusement, bottle wine gifts and prizes from James Han, president of QQ Tour and Travel.
He provided $100 to the first place winner, one-day car rental from QQ Car Rental for second and third place, and free nail care at M&J Beauty Salon to the fourth and fifth place winners. The entry fee pot was split with $70 for first, $42 for second, and $28 for third place.
To keep the event from going to late, players pre-registered for the event and came in knowing their start time and opponent player for the night.
Agulto got an early Christmas present with a bye when his first opponent couldn’t make it. He climbed to the winner’s bracket final by not making mistakes and excellent shot-making while waiting for his opponents to give him an opening.
He overcame Masayos, Suzuki, and Rengiil in his steady march to the top.
Masayos had edged Norm Tenorio, while Suzuki outdid Maratita and Pat Taitano before falling to Agulto. Taitano had sent Tay Watanabe to the losers bracket.
Rengiil handed Ron Chisato, husband Rick Rengiil, and Sablan their first losses, but fell short against Agulto. Sablan had started out strong with a win over Pat Cepeda.
Maratita came back by eliminating Watanabe, Rick Rengiil and Tenorio, though Tenorio helped by scratching after banking the 8-ball. He then lost to Suzuki in a rematch.
Cepeda took out Chisato then lost to Masayos. Masayos also finished off Taitano..
Sablan continued his excellent play, stopping Masayas and edging out Mei Rengiil in their second meeting of the night.
Agulto got the better position in the final game and held on for the win. (PR)
