AG’s Cup Speech Competition on May 6
The Office of the Attorney General is pleased to announce that the 32nd Annual Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition will be held on May 6, 2016, at 9am at the CNMI Supreme Court courtroom.
“The AG’s Cup provides our high schools with the opportunity to research an issue that affects the Commonwealth, form a position on the issue, and showcase their voice and passion for his or her position on the topic,” said Attorney General Edward Manibusan.
This year, seven high schools will be participating: Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, Mt. Carmel School, Grace Christian Academy, Marianas Baptist Academy, Dr. Rita H. Inos High School, and Northern Marianas Academy.
This year’s topic focuses on the right to bear arms in the CNMI. The issue presented is: (1) Should the CNMI permit individuals to carry handguns on their person in public? If the answer is yes, argue whether individuals should be required to conceal the handgun, whether individuals should be required to carry the handgun open and in plain sight, or whether individuals should be permitted to choose whether to conceal or openly carry the handgun. In addition, outline any restrictions you would impose on individuals seeking to carry handguns in public; (2) If your answer is no, should the CNMI permit individuals to carry handguns on their person in public, please provide argument in defense of this position. The Office of the Attorney General welcomes the public to attend the speech competition and support the students of the CNMI.
