Marianas Trench Marine National Monument
The letter writers in opposition to the proposed “National Park of the Sea” all seem to be afraid to mention the full name of the local coordinator of this proposed project, Angelo Villagomez. There, I said it. Angelo Villagomez. Do you know Angelo Villagomez?
Angelo Villagomez was born here and his family is here. He is Chamorro. This is his home. His father was the late Justice Ramon G. Villagomez, a man I am proud to call my mentor.
Angelo Villagomez helped me and several others launch Beautify CNMI! I’m sure you’ve seen him in the newspaper, on TV, or on the Internet. Or maybe you’ve heard him on the radio?
For over two years, Angelo Villagomez has helped Beautify CNMI! coordinate beach cleanups, road cleanups, tree plantings, paint over graffiti, restore historical sites, clear hiking trails, plan and facilitate meetings, and host other events, such as our recent concert with Jake Shimabukuro, that help to make these islands a better place to live and visit.
Angelo Villagomez brought a level of enthusiasm and energy, not to mention talent, that launched Beautify CNMI! into the stratosphere. I am convinced that Beautify CNMI would not be what it is today without him.
Angelo Villagomez is now proposing a project that would create federally funded local jobs, give a needed boost to our struggling tourism industry, bring positive worldwide attention to our shores, and most importantly, protect three of our islands and their surrounding waters for generations to come.
I support the proposed Marianas Trench Marine National Monument and my only hope is that it is not too late for us to have the opportunity to dialogue with the Federal government on this proposed project.
