Instead of bare space, there were three tall stools and three microphone stands on the stage. Instead of a full drum set, the drummer had a beat box. And instead of dizzying strobe lights and a disco ball, there was subdued lighting all throughout, except for a steady spotlight that focused on the three singers.

It was Acoustic Nights at Club V and the crowd was in a mellow mood, kicking back with a Carlsberg bottle in one hand and a bevy of friends in the other. Yet for all that it was a Wednesday night, the size of the crowd that crammed itself into Club V would have you thinking that it was a weekend.

It was the official launching of the “Acoustic Nights with Carlsberg” and the place was packed. Pacific Wines and Spirits, the local distributor of Carlsberg beer, had invited all the wait staff, bartenders, and Food and Beverage personnel from the island’s hotels and restaurants to introduce them to the new product but it was a mixed crowd that came to taste and enjoy what has been dubbed as “probably the best beer in the world.” Crowd estimates ranged from 250 to 300 persons who mixed and mingled with several PWS staff that were distinctly dressed in green, carrying on the motif of the dark green Carlsberg bottles.

The star of the night, Carlsberg premium pilsner beer, was a smash hit. The Q room, which had been set up with six dispensers, had long lines snaking out the door, as guests treated themselves to glass after glass of the excellent lager. Club V’s wait staff couldn’t replenish the dispensers fast enough!

Club V’s resident band, Zynergy, was the other star attraction, entertaining the crowd with a mixed plate of love songs, pop, reggae, and acoustic rendition of rock favorites. Brad Ruszala, the host for the night, entertained the crowd between sets with contests and trivia questions that gave the crowd a chance to win buckets of Carlsberg beer and other Carlsberg souvenirs such as t-shirts and bottle openers. For example: “What is the alcohol content of a bottle of Carlsberg beer?” Answer: 5 percent. The participation of visiting sailors in the contests was a bonus, ensuring that these visitors enjoy themselves on their R&R.

The night’s overall success bodes well for the “Acoustic Nights with Carlsberg” and Club V patrons will definitely have something new to look forward to every Wednesday night. One guest summed it up when she was overheard saying, “This is a great idea! If this keeps up, I will definitely become a regular customer here every Wednesday night.”
