Demapan sets score to beat for May
Joe Demapan has one hand wrapped around the championship for May after topping the Refaluwasch Golf Association monthly qualifier last Saturday held in conjunction with the 6th Annual NMC Foundation Open.
The former Department of Public Works secretary shot a net score of 65 to beat 11 other RGA members that took part in the yearly charity event for the islands’ lone tertiary institution.
Demapan fired his 65 on the strength of his 78 gross following a 37 in the front nine and a 41 in the back.
Five strokes behind him was another Joe, Joe Saures, whose net 70 (90 gross, 50-40) was just one stroke better than the net 71 recorded by Tar Olopai (83, 41-42).
The score of the other nine RGA golfers that took part in the competition, with their net scores in parenthesis, are as follows: Andy Nepaial (72); Ed “Doi” Tenorio (73); Ben Duenas (74); Asterio Tawanpiy (76); Joe Wabol (79); Jess Wabol (79); Will Maui (81); junior golfer Jay Choi (86); and Gus Camacho (86).
Since the monthly qualifier was held during the NMC Foundation Open, no close to the pin competitions were held. RGA also welcomed a new member in the person of Ulyses Ketebengang this April.
The RGA Ace of the Month for May will be held on May 10 at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort west course. Tee time is at 12pm with check in 30 minutes prior at 11:30am.
In related news, RGA reminded the public that that the club has halved its membership dues for 2008 from the long-standing fee of $50 to only $25.
This happened after RGA recognized the hard economic times and decided to give its members and future members a break by slashing the cost of becoming part of RGA.
The club hopes that by making membership in RGA a little lighter in the pocket, more weekend warriors will now return to the golf links and renew their membership or apply as new members of the golf club.
