Saipan’s Tudela hopes to keep his 32 employees
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela said he is crossing his fingers that help is on its way from the Saipan legislative delegation to keep his 32 employees from being laid off.
“So far, there had been no layoffs, terminations or nonrenewal. But we are just crossing our fingers to get needed assistance from the Saipan delegation,” Tudela said.
Funds had been recently identified to keep the employees at least until June 7.
Tudela said that the Office of the Mayor is aware of at least a couple of recently introduced legislations that would help over 160 local government employees whose jobs are in limbo.
“Hopefully, one of those will come to light and help these individuals. By the end of May we should get a pretty good picture of what will happen,” Tudela said.
Most of the affected workers in the Mayor’s Office are heavy equipment operators, community service men, and field operators.
Tudela said that, although losing his 32 employees may not “significantly” affect operations and services provided by the Mayor’s Office, it will “reduce our community service a little bit.”
