New MP magazine now on sale at local outlets
The March-April issue of MP magazine is now on sale at numerous locations on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. The MP publishing team is especially excited about this issue as it brings local and stateside readers in-depth articles about two topics of major interest to the CNMI.
One feature article, The Issue of Federalization, was written by David Cohen soon after he left his position as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs this past January. It expresses his personal views on the move to federalize the CNMI’s immigration system. The piece is especially engaging because Cohen writes from the heart as well as from the mind, thereby displaying his compassion for Pacific island nations and his keen intellect. The publisher of MP, Ed Propst, stated, “Being chosen as the purveyor of Cohen’s candid statements on the federalization topic and his explanation about how he came to develop his position on issues related to this matter readily demonstrates that MP has come of age.” In the article, Cohen explains how federalization will bring social and economic benefits to the CNMI while addressing U.S. security concerns.
An accompanying piece on federalization was compiled by MP in order to provide readers with a tool for understanding key provisions in the federalization of immigration bill. S.2739 highlights summarizes the duration, key activities, and status of guest workers relative to each of the three stages in the implementation of the proposed legislation, as well as the congressional intent and other key provisions of the bill.
Another feature article, A National Marine Park in the CNMI-Priceless, was authored by local entrepreneur Laurie Peterka. This piece, accompanied by stunning photography, presents details about the proposal to set aside the northernmost region of the CNMI, an area of 115,000 square miles, as a marine national monument. As one of the largest such areas in the world, it would offer considerable opportunity to the CNMI on many fronts, not the least of which would be greater recognition with regard to marine research, environmental preservation, and ecotourism. This MP exclusive explains what such a marine preserve will mean for the CNMI’s current and future generations.
MP, in case you missed it, held its own private coronation affair, dubbing Chuck Jordan as “Coffee King of the Marianas.” An article by Ed Propst, about Jordan’s effort to restore coffee as a major local crop, explains how coffee may well become a major export for the CNMI as well as offer economic opportunities for numerous local farmers.
Other articles include a reprint of a story about a group of Anatahan stragglers who were marooned on that island from 1944 to 1951; a profile about Will Dewitt, music teacher and conductor of the award winning band at Saipan Southern High School; an interview with MMA legend Enson Inoue; and the latest research results on the correlation between gum disease and other major health problems. Eye-catching photography and non-cluttered layout, for which MP has become touted, adds to the appeal of each article.
The magazine is now being sold locally in several locations, including Joeten stores in Susupe and Garapan, Price-Costco, Java Joe’s, Kagman Market, Tun Kiku’s Market, Da Rock Steady Shop, Bestseller, NMC Bookstore, Tinian Ice and Water on Tinian, and As Paris Restaurant on Rota.
