Veteran runner Ronald Villafria and bubbly triathlete Mieko Carey topped the annual Club Elan 5K Fun Run in record-breaking fashion last Saturday at American Memorial Park.

Villafria, who was part of a relay team that swept this year’s XTERRA and Tagaman triathlons, broke the 21 minutes and 10 seconds recorded last year by Cooper Schraudenbach by posting a best time of 18:59.

He was almost a full minute ahead of rising long-distance runner Matt Mancao as the 16-year-old placed second with a time of 19:42 while Tom Linden came in third, 19:59.

Carey was the fastest female runner after touching the tape at 20:53 with Mamiko Oshima coming in at second, 21:37, while the come-backing Noriko Jim placed third at 21:54.

Northern Marianas Athletics athletes Champ Untalan and Jacque Wonenberg were the top male and female 18-and-under runners after registering times of 22:01 and 25:06.

Tamio Nishikido won the male 30-39 division with a time of 20:41, while Sandra Um duplicated his feat in the women’s division after clocking in at 25:28.

The husband-and-wife tandem of John Douglas and Dawn Hammermeister were the top pair in the 40-49 age group with times of 20:39 and 27:24, while Fred Camacho and Suzy Kindel were the first male and female runners in the 50-and-over class with times of 23:14 and 25:28, respectively.

In the shorter course, John Auther won the 8-and-under division with a time of 9:59, while older brother Danny Auther won the 12-and-under touching the tape at 9:57.

The annual Club Elan 5K Fun Run featured competition in six divisions—men’s and women’s open, men’s and women’s 18-and-under, men’s and women’s 30-39, men’s and women’s 40-49, men’s and women’s 50-and-over, and kids 12-and-under, and kids 8-and-under.

A banquet was held after the early morning race at the poolside of the Hyatt Regency Saipan where special prizes and other in-kind giveaways were given to the winners.

All participants of the fun run also received an event T-shirt, full usage of Club Elan (main pool, locker rooms, spa area, towels, etc.) for the day and after the event, and ticket to the awards banquet held in the evening.
