Historical items donated to the NMI Museum
The NMI Museum of History and Culture was the recent recipient of a collection of historical items, donated by Floyd Masga. An April 1945 edition of National Geographic and a number of World War II Japanese peso notes were presented to the museum.
The National Geographic features a 30-page article on the war on Saipan and Tinian, complete with 24 plates. The plate images feature the civilian camps, local police, various Saipan and Tinian post-battle scenery, and the survey of damage done to the Shinto shrine and Taga stones on Tinian, among others.
The Japanese pesos, a Japanese-government issued fiat currency, were used in the Philippines during World War II. Fifty, five and one peso denominations were included in the donation.
Masga noted that, aside from wanting to support the museum and make these items available to the public, he is especially interested in having the public help identify the individuals in some of the photos included in the National Geographic.
The museum expresses its thanks for this donation, and the many other donations of historical objects made by CNMI residents. The main purpose of the museum is to care for and make available to the public historical objects.
Museum director Robert Hunter said: “It is through generous donations such as this, that the museum expands its collections. The museum is a repository of these very important historical objects, objects that help record and tell the story of the NMI, and that are accessible to all of the residents of the CNMI.”
The NMI Museum, located across the Sugar King Park, is open from Monday through Saturday. Contact the museum at 664-2160 for additional information. (PR)
