The Senate confirmed the nomination of former lawmaker Clyde K. Norita as commissioner for the Department of Public Safety yesterday.

The senators voted unanimously to confirm Norita’s appointment after a brief hearing.

At the hearing, Norita outlined his plans for the department and addressed the looming deployment of some 32 DPS employees who are in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez and former Immigration Director Martin Manglona testified in support of Norita’s nomination.

The Fitial administration announced Norita’s appointment on March 11, 2008.

Norita replaced former Commissioner Rebecca Warfield, who is now back in her old job as an assistant attorney general with the criminal division.

Norita is a retired police officer. He was a one-term member of the House of Representatives, serving from 2004 to 2005.

In 2006, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial appointed Norita to serve without compensation as his special adviser to the Department of Public Safety. After a brief stint at DPS, Norita was named executive director of the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

He has also served as an acting Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Public Safety. He rose through the ranks as a career law enforcement professional, going from police officer 1 to the rank of major. Norita attended numerous professional development conferences and law enforcement training sessions throughout his 20-year career at DPS.
