Badminton meet opens tomorrow
Badminton action returns tomorrow when the 2nd Annual Northern Marianas Badminton Federation Doubles Tournament kicks off at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The tournament’supported in part by Michelob, MARPAC, JET Holdings, At Your Service, Nathan Clarke Matsumoto, and the Tournament Committee—attracted close to 40 players in the men’s and women’s divisions. The players where then classified into Class A, B, and C.
The men’s Class A division will follow a round-robin format since it may only consist of three to four pairs, while the men’s and women’s B and C divisions will have a double elimination round.
The tournament will be held every Saturday and Tuesday only with the play dates slated on April 19, 22, 26, and 29, and May 3 and 6. A defaulting time of 15 minutes will be followed in the tournament.
The elimination round games will follow one set of race-to-31 points in both the doubles and mixed doubles events. The quarter, semis, and finals will follow the regular scoring consisting of three-set matches of 21 points.
If the score becomes 20-all the side which first earns a two-point lead first wins the game and if the If the score is tied at 29-all, the side scoring the 30th point shall win that game.
Regular rules of the game of badminton will be observed specially with serving where the whole shuttle should be below the server’s waist at the instant of being hit by the server’s racket. The waist shall be considered to be an imaginary line around the body, level with the lowest part of the server’s rib.
The shaft of the server’s racket at the instant of hitting shall be pointing in a downward direction.
The server shall not serve before the receiver is ready. However, the receiver shall be considered to have been ready if a return of the service is attempted.
In doubles, during the delivery of service, the partner may take up any position within their respective courts, which do not distract the opposing server or receiver.
