Boating safety officers rescued a man who had leg cramps while fishing in the lagoon along Beach Road in Chalan Laulau Sunday afternoon.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said yesterday that 27-year-old Marco Fitial refused to be brought to the Commonwealth Health Center and was released at the scene.

The DPS spokesperson said that on Sunday at 3:43pm police received a report of a stranded swimmer inside the lagoon along Beach Road.

Preliminary investigation showed that Fitial went fishing in the lagoon and that after 10 minutes, he sustained a cramp on the leg.

Fitial waved his arms in the air to get help. A witness identified as Ramir Santos saw the victim and asked help from Pete Pereda, who was walking along the pathway. Ogumoro said that Pereda called the police.

Boating Safety officers arrived at the scene and transported Fitial safely to the shore. Medics treated the victim at the scene.

Pereda, however, said that it was actually Jing Hao Lee of Jy Corp. who saved the victim. Pereda said that Lee was driving along Beach Road and that he flagged him down to ask for his help, seeing as he was towing some jet skis. Lee parked beside the road, put on his diving suit, and jumped into the water to save Fitial.
