Bangladeshi community marks Bengali New Year
At least 300 people gathered at the Garapan Central Park Monday evening to welcome the Bengali New Year 1415, Poheala Boishak.
Cultural song-and-dance numbers and activities were performed during the event by members of the Bangladeshi community as well as representatives of the Filipino, Chinese, and local community who participated to show their support.
Food was also shared as people in the crowd greeted and wished each other a bright new year.
One of the highlights of the festivity was the colorful fireworks display donated by the Saipan Taxi Association.
Saipan Taxi Association president Rabby Syed, who attended the event with his family, said he is happy that people in the community have come together “to celebrate with us on this wonderful occasion.”
Special guests at the event included former Labor hearing officer Herbert Soll, Marianas High School teacher Ron Hodges, and Human Dignity Movement president Jerry Custodio.
Rep. Tina Sablan was also invited as a special guest to the event but was not able to make it; however, she provided the Bangladeshi community a special message, wishing them a prosperous new year.
“This is a very special day for all of us. And we are very thankful that our Chinese, local, and Filipino friends were able to come and show their support for us. For that, we want to extend our most heartfelt appreciation to them,” Syed said.
