Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is off to Palau next week to attend the 9th Western Micronesian Chief Executives Summit.

The conference will be held on April 23 to April 26, 2008.

For this reason, the governor has asked the Legislature to reschedule his State of the Commonwealth Address, which was originally slated for April 25, 2008.

Fitial said the twice-yearly conference had already been set and he feels “obligated to participate in this important regional forum.”

Saipan hosted the last two meetings of the Micronesian leaders.

Members of the summit include Fitial, Guam Gov. Felix P. Camacho, Palau President Tommy Remengasau, Yap Gov. Sebastian Anefal, and Federated States of Micronesia President Emanuel Mori.

Topics discussed during the meetings include workforce investment, invasive species, solid waste management, energy, health, tourism, transportation, zoning, education, and the Micronesian Challenge.

Fitial has urged the Legislature to schedule his annual speech for the second week of May.

After the Palau trip, the governor plans to be off island the first week of May for an undisclosed reason, and again at the end of May to attend his daughter’s college graduation in California.
