Veteran referee resumes school tour
Veteran referee Arnold Mesa resumed his school tour, this time making the Marianas Baptists Academy his latest stop in teaching to students the basic skills of basketball.
Mesa held two sessions at the MBA campus in Dandan on April 7 and 9 from 3pm to 5pm. He said the MBA coach is requesting another clinic but Mesa said he would be available for another session after his visit to Grace Christian Academy.
Mesa taught 10 “keys” to students starting by explaining the importance of warm-up exercises before every game and practice. He then did some sliding, crossover, and pump fake drills and taught the fundamentals of blocking a shot.
He also showed the students the basic footwork in handling the ball and to understand the pivot move while also explaining about out of bounds, and end and side line plays.
To the point guards, Mesa taught them how to properly set up their team’s offense and how to help each other in creating screens and posting up plays. He also taught them how to channel the offense towards the trapping areas on the most crucial spots called “coffin corners,” and how to contain their opponents’ ball carriers.
Mesa said he also wanted to teach local players about the latest defense being used by college coaches in the mainland. “This type of technology must be taught through out the Pacific region so our youth can understand more how basketball should be played efficiently and with no injuries.”
